The September Issue, the movie, and the September issue, the magazine

If you ever doubted the power and prowess of Anna Wintour, The September Issue, a documentary following Anna and the Vogue staff in the months leading up to the all-important drop date, will drive it home.

As certain as 'September is the January in fashion', when Anna gets behind something, the world watches. Or reads, rather.

Millions of women around the world will cower over the glossy pages of next month’s Vogue. And many a man hours were put into making it.

The September Issue director R.J. Cutler said he had so much footage that he erroneously left André Leon Talley out of the first cut. Little did he know that Leon Talley’s ‘famine of beauty’ line would become a catchphrase well in advance of the movie's release. You can even download the phrase as a ringtone on The September Issue's Facebook page.

And don’t pretend you wouldn’t like that recited next time your in-need-of-a-makeover mother calls to complain.

The excess that was present in creating last September’s issue, however, is not a very accurate depiction of the current climate. And that sentiment is obvious on the cover of THIS September issue.

I never thought I would see the day that ‘Smart steals and stylish splurges’ would grace the cover of Vogue, yet here it is.

Maybe after all those lost ad pages, Anna et al. are starting to recognize that Vogue is a little out of touch with ‘the people’.

People like me, in fact, who forfeited my AMERICAN Vogue collection in favour of more accessible reads like BRITISH Vogue, or innovative ones like i-D. Or reading blogs, like this one.

Shameless self-promotion, I know. But true, nonetheless.
