Don't have the money? Do It Yourself.
In this economy, people are pinching pennies, not willing to spend so much on seasonal trends. Instead, more and more are turning 'Do It Yourself'-ers (DIY), and rejuvenating pieces in their current wardrobes.
Plus, with the introduction of DIY online marketplaces like Etsy.com, even if you can't manage DIY yourself, someone else can and at a fraction of the designer price.
However, I firmly believe that if I can do it, you can do it. So, here are a few DIY 'projects' I, and you too, can manage.
(Mark my word, I can barely sew a button)
1. Colour and texture. My first tip does not even involve any manual labour, but simply rethinking the pieces in your closet. Consider how you wore something previously, and completely remix it. For example, wear a spring floral under a sombre tweed blazer, or pair pastels with jewel tones a la Dries Van Noten for a current fall look.
2. Accessorize. Your look will read more expensive and more modern with great accessories, like a statement necklace. Even paired with a simple t-shirt or €5 ribbed tank, it can carry an outfit.
I recently spotted this €540(!) ribbed tank on Net-a-porter.com with a detachable such statement necklace. It's hard to believe there are people who can't devise such a look themselves, but, hey, good for Net-a-porter.com for exploiting them.

3. Haberdashery. There are some things that just scream DIY, especially when confronted with an unjustifiable pricetag. Such was the case with these €435 Miu Miu embellished socks, also from Net-a-porter.com.
(Side note: although it would seem to the contrary, I do still love Net-a-porter.com)
I love these socks, but I definitely do not love them €435-worth. I do love them enough, though, to bring myself to a haberdashery store to pick up some sequins and sew them on some H&M hoisery.
